xbox hack, followup

the xbox hack was attempted almost 20 months ago. I've been gathering info, and making a few attempts every few months for a while now. as it turns out, I just had a bad action replay stick of memory - and using a 64mb thumbdrive from a friend, formatting it as fatx, hacking the driver using usbview.exe so the action replay software supported the thumbdrive and not just the action replay device I was able to use the action replay software to copy the hack onto the good media in the thumbdrive, and then use mech asault game to softmod my v 1.6 xbox. worked like a champ. I'm about 2 days from copying a new build of xbmc (Xbox Media Center) onto it and turning it into a head for my movies. Now all I need is some network attached storrage and I can get rid of all the computer noise during movies.

this was pretty straight foward.

the bling bling distro of xbmc with the mc360 skin and advanced features is nothing short of amazing. some embedded python scripts are doing some awesome things. it started autodiscovering network shares and everything just 'worked'. several teams have a very polished presentation and i'm confident I can sell some xboxs to my friends for microsoft. microsoft is an IDIOT for not promoting this.

that looks pretty cool. will it play regular DIVX with mp3 audio and/or ogg audio? if the price is right, I see this eventually making it to my collectino if I get a TV. does the xbox have a regular HD in it? 3.5"?

the xbox has NO video inputs on it. it's all about output with that box,and it supports composite, s-video, and will do vga (probably 640x480) if you solder some wires onto the motherboard directly. what it does do is run emulators (at least 30 of them), and about any kind of video/audio combination you can imagine. My build of xbmc is less then 2 weeks old and they did their homework. I attached it to a RAR on a network share and within 2 seconds it was playing the contents. I've tried several different xvid's with multiple styles of audio, and it won't even hickup, it's rock solid. It also has an imbedded lookup for rss, youtube, googlevideo, the weather chanel, updates to the skins of xbmc, xbmc news, milkdrop ported from winamp for visulations during music playback, and who knows what else.

I see myself playing with the emulators and homebrew more, the fact it can rip games and play 'backup games' does not really interest me.

If you are wanting a tivo experience, get a tivo. if you are wanting one fantastic head for your media, spend the 120$ for a used xbox and mod it. I can even send you what I do have for a no-screws-removed exploit path that use some saved games.

you can use this as a bridge into your tivo and just use that for recording (and the equivelent of network attached storage for your videos)

xbmc 2.0.0 just came out. it supports even more media types and by default includes the xb360 skin. the best just got better.

i get the chance to mod two 1.0 xboxs. looks like the Krayzie's UXE softmod from #xbins hits the spot nicely. just remember to backup the EEROM TWICE, once from the main menu, and a second time from the return menu and it seems to work fine. Otherwise it freaks out because it cannot rename a backup file that does not exist.
